Castlewellan farmer prosecuted following death of labourer

The Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) has investigated a fatal incident which subsequently has led to the prosecution of a farmer from Ballyward, Castlewellan, for breaches of Health and Safety legislation.

The farmer had pleaded guilty to the offence at an earlier hearing and was fined £25,000 at Newry Crown Court on 5th July.

An HSENI Inspector commented after the hearing that “If farmers employ staff they have a responsibility to ensure their safety, whether full time or casual staff.  In this case, the absence of proper supervision and inappropriate access to dangerous equipment resulted in the tragic incident”
